How Video Games Are Not Just For Kids
Games are something people play for fun. If so, then it’s different from job hunting. Many games are just recreational, and in these instances, there isn’t usually much money to be won. However, there are other types of games with several types of winning equipment.
One of these is role-play, which also involves problem-solving skills. The objective of role-play is generally to create characters who act out a specific story. Adventure games seek to solve problems, while problem-solving games seek to achieve some goal.
A good example of a recreational role-play game would be Mabinogi, which is an adventure game similar to the classic card game. In Mabinogi, players take on the persona of a member of a secret international agency, searching for a missing kitten. To do so, they must find a map, track down clues, and perform a series of tasks that eventually lead to finding the fabled kitten. The object of the game isn’t so much to win, but to stay within the time limit (the game lasts only ten minutes, for example). And although some may consider this slow – a quarter of an hour is really stretching it, especially given that most adventure games should be at least five hours long – Mabinogi manages to maintain the pace at all times, providing plenty of variety as it goes along.
Other types of recreational activity may include strategy games and card games. Video games such as Mario are extremely popular with children, and many adults enjoy playing these video games. However, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish real strategy games from elaborate role-play games. Fortunately, computer game developers have recognized this problem and have often attempted to provide strategic elements, such as turns, random events, and hidden objects, within their computer games.
Board games are a category that continues to grow in popularity, especially with the release of more board games based on popular culture topics. Board games are typically associated with leisure or relaxation, such as chess and Monopoly, which require players to develop strategies in order to advance to the next level. Strategy games, on the other hand, require players to come up with creative plans in order to win. Two of the most popular board games in recent years have been Chess and Candyland, which are enjoyed by both kids and adults. With new board games based on popular TV shows such as Scrubs and Grey’s Anatomy coming out every year, there is no shortage of potential educational uses for video games.
Of course, the physical activities provided by video games can also provide plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. In fact, recent studies have shown that playing video games such as World of Warcraft can lead to increased attention, better memory, increased skill, reaction time, and even increased athletic performance. This is because the interaction with others requires the use of cognitive processes such as abstract thought and rationalization, which are all useful in learning and acquiring knowledge. One of the biggest problems with traditional physical activities, however, is that many people find the act of moving around too much of a hassle. Computer games offer a fun alternative that involves minimal physical activity but can provide hours of entertainment and mental stimulation.
